A region large enough that most people pick two or three countries and combine them into one longer trip rather than trying to cover it all. The flights are long, so it repays staying a while.
What it's known for
- Thailand Bangkok, the temples and hill country around Chiang Mai, and the Andaman beaches in the south
- Vietnam Hanoi, the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay and the old trading port of Hoi An
- Singapore Compact and easy, and a common place to break the journey for a night or two
- India Delhi, Agra and Jaipur on a first trip, with Kerala's backwaters as a slower alternative

When to go
Southeast Asia's dry season runs roughly November to March. India is most comfortable October to March. The monsoon shapes the calendar almost everywhere, so timing matters more here than in most regions.
