Belize

Reef on one side, rainforest on the other

The only country in Central America where English is the official language, and small enough to pair a few days on the barrier reef with a few days inland without long transfers.

What it's known for

  • The Belize Barrier Reef A UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest reef in the northern hemisphere
  • Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker The main island bases for diving, snorkelling and doing very little
  • Cayo District Inland jungle, river caves and the Maya sites of Xunantunich and Caracol
  • Placencia A long sand peninsula on the southern coast, quieter than the northern cayes

When to go

The dry season runs roughly December to May. June to November is wetter and falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season.

Getting there

Flights route through Houston, Dallas, Miami or Los Angeles into Belize City.
