Small, calm and easily added to an Argentina trip — Colonia is about an hour by ferry across the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires.

When to go

Southern summer, December to March, for the coast. Spring and autumn are pleasant and much quieter.

Getting there

Ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia or Montevideo, or a short flight. Almost always combined with Argentina.
